Work permits in Switzerland
Requirements and process overview
Who needs a work permit to work in Switzerland?
Essentially, a valid work permit is always required to work in Switzerland. The regulations depend on nationality, length of stay and type of employment. They are based on the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act and the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the EU/EFTA.
What are the differences between permits for EU/EFTA citizens and third-country nationals?
For EU/EFTA citizens, access to the labor market is largely liberalized. A residence permit (L or B) is required for employment of more than three months, while short-term employment of up to 90 days is subject to a registration procedure.
Third-country nationals must meet stricter requirements. Only qualified professionals who have an employment contract and whose employment complies with Swiss wage and working condition regulations will be granted a permit – and only within limited quotas.
